Do I Have To Appear in Court in Virginia?
If you were issued a ticket for a traffic offense, a small box on the citation indicates whether you are required to physically appear in court to answer the charges. If the box is not checked, you may simply pay the fine by mail.

If the box is checked, you are required to appear. However, in some instances individual courts will allow a lawyer to stand in for you. Hugh S. Campbell has appeared in traffic court to dispute the charges or enter a plea on behalf of hundreds of clients who could not travel back to Virginia for the court appearance. Contact us today!

Our Interstate freeway system enables Americans to travel freely across the country and explore this great land. Unfortunately, it also introduces many travelers to the traffic laws of other states.

The Ashland, Virginia law firm of Campbell & Campbell, PC represents clients throughout the Richmond area and statewide, as well as out-of-state visitors, who are ticketed for drunk driving, reckless driving, speeding and other traffic violations.

Hugh S. Campbell has practiced law in Virginia since 1992 and has handled thousands of traffic offenses. These can have serious impacts on your driver's license and auto insurance. Campbell & Campbell provides reliable legal counsel and aggressive representation in:

  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Eluding police
  • Driving without insurance
  • License restoration
  • DUI / Habitual Offender
  • Aggressive driving
  • Hit and run  / leaving the scene
  • Trucker violations
  • Accident tickets
  • Driving without a license (suspended license or revoked license)

Out-of-State Drivers

Virginia has reciprocity agreements with most states, and will report your speeding ticket, reckless driving, DUI or other traffic offense to the motor vehicle department of your home state. In some instances, Campbell & Campbell can stand in for you in court if you were traveling through Virginia at the time of the citation and it is not convenient for you to return for a court appearance. Contact us today about protecting your rights if you are from out-of-town.

Speeding Tickets and Driving School

If you are charged with speeding or reckless driving, the judge may reduce or eliminate the charge if you attend driving school. This will lessen or avoid the negative impact on your license and insurance.

Drunk Driving (DWI)

It is imperative to fight a DUI, whether it is your first, second or third offense, because of the legal and financial ramifications. Conviction for a first offense includes a 1-year suspension of your license, with a restricted license granted at the discretion of the court. (Refusal of a breathalyzer test may result in an additional 1-year suspension with no restricted license.) A second DUI will mean a 3-year loss of license and usually includes jail time. Protect your rights.  Contact an attorney immediately if you are charged with DUI.

Representation for Truckers

If you have a CDL license, strong legal representation for traffic violations is critical to retaining your livelihood. A conviction for DUI, for example, spells suspension of your license with no possibility of a restricted license. Also, if you are in the trucking business, driving school is not an option to reduce or eliminate a speeding or reckless driving ticket. Your only hope is to aggressively fight the charges. Campbell & Campbell is familiar with the local court systems and all traffic laws of Virginia pertaining to commercial drivers.
